Environmental Compliance in the Defense Sector

A German military systems manufacturer urgently required a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a detailed disposal concept for a complex mechatronic system.
This demanding documentation was governed by civilian regulations—such as the Environmental Impact Assessment Act (UVPG), the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG), the Circular Economy Act (KrWG), and the EU Waste Framework Directive—as well as strict military regulations. The latter specifically included the German Armed Forces’ (Bundeswehr) Customer Product Management (CPM) framework and internal departmental regulations on waste management.
Objectives & Challenges
The core challenge was to comprehensively catalogue all components of the complex system under intense time constraints. Concurrently, the applicability of overlapping civilian and military standards had to be verified for every individual sub-assembly and documented in a legally compliant manner.
The Approach
To guarantee maximum data density and consistency despite high system complexity, Codronic utilized a methodical, quality-assured analytical process divided into four key phases:

Structured System Analysis: All components were captured and categorized based on approved engineering data. Items were classified into mechanical and electrical components, commercial parts—including COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) and MOTS (Modified Off-The-Shelf)—and specific logistics groups.

Material and Compliance Mapping: Materials used throughout the system were identified. For outsourced parts, existing manufacturer certificates were audited to provide legally secure and traceable proof of full compliance with the REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006) and the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU).

Targeted Engineering Research: Information gaps were systematically closed through a deep-dive analysis of technical documentation and direct technical clarification with the respective suppliers.

Hazardous Substance Classification: Environmentally critical substances were precisely identified, ranging from standard operating fluids (e.g., lubricants) to technically indispensable elements like cadmium, which remains critical in military high-performance connectors.
The Deliverable: All findings were consolidated into an audit-proof framework document. In addition to a detailed system description focusing on environmentally relevant substances, this document includes a complete legal compliance matrix, as well as concrete operational guidelines for mitigating environmental impacts and adhering to transport regulations.
